This is the announcement for Trustix Secure Linux 2.0 beta 2 nickname Hurricane. Being a beta we will not recommend it for production use nor will we maintain it. You will probably not be able to swup-upgrade, and it's not recommended due to the major changes in most of the packages. A plain reinstall is recommended. We release this distribution to give you a chance to test and comment on it before it evolves into TSL 2.0. We also wish to thank those who tested and gave us valuable feedback on the previous pre-releases. The main focus of this release is to get a test of each and every package. If you run for instance OpenLDAP in a production environment and consider doing so on TSL 2, now is the time to make sure it really works and let us know if it doesn't. Also, if you think our default configuration for your favorite package contains some errors, please let us know. This applies to all services and packages and in particular: * apache. With or without PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL and all the rest. * bind. With or without sercure DNS, access control and whatnot. * courier-imap. This one is currently undergoing a major overhaul. * cups. Can you get those .png's to print? * cyrus-imapd. * cyrus-sasl. Authenticate those users! * dhcp. Can you take advantage of DHCP 3? * freeswan. Does that VPN of yours run smoothly? * initscripts. Can you do everything you want to? And does your clock still work? * iproute. Can you do those insane routings? * iptables. Does your firewall work as expected? * libsmbpwd. Can you authenticate against those samba passwords? * lvm. Create those volumes! Or wait for toreo to do it for you! * mdadm. Does this really work better than raidtools? * mysql. Version 4 is here, are you ready for it? * netatalk. Can you do as expected with those MAC's? * nfs-utils. Is your NFS faster than ever? Or just the same? * ntp. Does this thing actually work in a secure manner? * openldap. Here is a lot of room for improvement. Feel free to be part of it. * perl. Do those modules work? * postfix. This package has taken a giant leap forward. Did we miss anything on the way or can use the full potential of this powerful tool? * postgresql. The joy of some. Do we deliver what you need? * pptpd. Is this needed or can FreeSWAN do it all better? * quota. New release. Is it harder on users than the previous? * rp-pppoe. Does your ADSL still work? * stunnel. Can you tunnel those connections? * swup. Does it still do miracles or are you all using apt-get by now? * xinetd. Can you do all those nice configurations? Let us know. tsl-discuss at trustix dot org is the place, and we are always open. There are a few incompatibilities with previous releases. The main issue is that we have rearranged the UID/GID of some services to make them more sane. Also, this release introduces CUPS as a printing system. Lprng is still there, but may be moved to contrib before the final release. You can find it on or on your favorite mirror. This release features: * Improved package selection. Should make it a lot easier to select which packages to install. * Rewritten init scripts. * Apache 2 * Bind 9.2 * Courier IMAP daemon * Cyrus IMAP daemon * CUPS printing system * DB1 and DB4 * ISC DHCP daemon 3 * Fcron * FreeSWAN 1.99 with x509 certificate support * GCC 3.2.3 * Glibc 2.3.2 * GnuPG 1.2.1 * Hdparm 5.2 * Kernel 2.4.20 which gives us at the very least * Journalled file systems: ext3, reiserfs and jfs * Iptables for improved firewalling * Improved hardware support including Intel Pentium 4 hyper threading * PHP 4.3 * MySQL 4 * Netcat * Netatalk 1.6 * NTP 4.1 * OpenLDAP 2.1 * OpenSSH 3.6.1 * OpenSSL 0.9.7a * Perl 5.8.0 * Postfix 2.0 * PostgreSQL-7.3 * PPTP * ProFTPd 1.2.8 * Python 2.2.2 * RPM 4.0.4 * RP-PPPoE 3.5 * Rsync 2.5.5 * Samba 2.2.8 * Squid 2.5 * Stunnel 4.04 * Swup/Rdfgen * Xinetd Thanks to: The cloud-dev crew * Goetz Bock * Gerald Dachs * Daniel Meyer * Janåke Rönnblom * Nico Erfurth * Tor Hveem * Roland Kruse (who works for Trustix AS with other commercial products, but tend to spend his time off with TSL rather than his wife :) who has hung with us for a year now trying to get this thing going. Also, thanks to the #trustix crew for providing value realtime conversation.
